Ruby Dhalla, a Canadian politician of Indian descent, is making history by running for the leadership of the Liberal Party. If she wins, she could become Canada’s first woman of colour to be Prime Minister. Dhalla believes it is important to have more diversity in the party and in discussions about the country.

As a successful businesswoman, doctor, and three-time Member of Parliament, Dhalla feels she has the experience needed to tackle Canada’s challenges. She has pointed out several important issues, such as the rising cost of housing, increasing crime rates, high food prices, and the threat of US tariffs. “The tariff threats that Canada is facing will have a big impact on Canadian workers and the economy,” she said.

Dhalla’s personal story is one of hard work and determination. She was born in Winnipeg to immigrant parents and has achieved her Canadian dream through her efforts. She credits former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau for opening Canada’s doors to immigrants in the 1970s. “My mother came to Canada in 1972, and because of her hard work and the opportunities in this country, I have been able to fulfill my Canadian dream,” she shared.

Dhalla also emphasized the importance of strengthening ties between Canada and India, especially given the large Indian community in Canada. She believes Canada should explore partnerships with other countries, including India, to help deal with the impact of US tariffs. Speaking in Hindi, she said, “Jitne bhi humare Canada main business log hain, workers hain, unko bhi ek opportunity milni chahiye ki wo baki deshon ke saath kaam kar sake,” which means, “Workers and business people in Canada should also get an opportunity to work with other countries.”

As Prime Minister, I will deport illegal immigrants and clamp down on human traffickers.

That’s my promise to you.

Having been involved with the Liberal Party since she was 14, Dhalla’s campaign focuses on rebuilding the party and the country. Her slogan, “Canada’s comeback starts now,” shows her commitment to addressing the country’s problems. In response to criticism from Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre about the Liberal Party’s effects on society and the economy, Dhalla outlined her plans to tackle crime, housing, food prices, and taxes.

Dhalla wants to create a strong economy that supports businesses, entrepreneurs, and young people. With her international experience, she hopes to restore Canada’s good reputation in the world and build strong relationships with other countries. “It’s important that we bring Canada back to being a respected country on the world stage and work with other nations to build great partnerships,” she said.

As Dhalla runs for this important position, her candidacy represents a significant step toward more diversity in Canadian politics. Many people will be watching the leadership race closely to see how she addresses the challenges facing the nation.
