The Uttar Pradesh Police have denied media reports suggesting that a woman from Jammu and Kashmir left her first husband to elope with a man from Uttar Pradesh. A senior officer from Kotwali Rae Bareli stated that no official complaint or information about such an incident has been received.
In an interview with Kashmir News Trust, the officer expressed surprise at how widely the story had spread, saying, “We don’t have any details about the woman’s identity or whereabouts, nor do we know who started this sensationalized story.”
The issue arose after a Delhi-based media outlet reported that a woman from Srinagar had married a man she met on Facebook from Uttar Pradesh, leaving her first husband. This report was picked up by several media platforms in both Delhi and Kashmir.
The officer criticized the lack of fact-checking in these reports, pointing out that they lacked crucial information, such as the woman’s identity. “All the outlets relied on the initial story from the Delhi source without verifying the facts. As law enforcement, we have no evidence to support these claims,” he explained.
He also noted that even if such an event had occurred, the people involved are adults and have the right to make their own choices about marriage. “Unless a complaint is filed or a legal issue arises, there is no reason for police involvement,” he added.
