Squid Game season 3 is confirmed and will be on Netflix soon. After a long wait of three years, Squid Game season 2 finally premiered in December 2024. The first season was released on September 17, 2021, and quickly became Netflix’s most-watched show ever. It was expected that the series would get a second season, even though most characters died in the first one. Season 2 continues the story with Gi-gun (played by Lee Jung-jae) returning to try and stop the deadly games.
The ending of Squid Game season 2 left viewers with many questions, so it’s no surprise that season 3 is already planned. Netflix announced in August 2024 that Squid Game would return for a third and final season in 2025, although they haven’t given an exact release date yet.
The reason for the long wait after season 1 is that seasons 2 and 3 were filmed back-to-back. This is a common strategy for Netflix, as seen with another popular Korean show, Sweet Home. Its first season came out in 2020, and while it took three years for season 2, the third season followed just six months later.
Squid Game season 2 has seven episodes, which is two fewer than the first season. While some fans might have wanted more episodes after waiting three years, the way seasons 2 and 3 were planned together makes sense. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk said he wrote both seasons as one big story and decided that episode 7 was a good place to pause before continuing with season 3.
Netflix hasn’t announced how many episodes season 3 will have, but since it was produced alongside season 2, it might have a similar number. The good news is that fans won’t have to wait as long for season 3 as they did for season 2. Even if there are fewer episodes, the story should flow well from where season 2 ended.
