Sonamarg, known as “the meadow of gold,” is located at 2,730 meters in Ganderbal district. In 2024, it saw a big increase in tourists, with 822,857 visitors. This included 766,309 international tourists, 40,356 local visitors, and 16,191 domestic tourists.
Sunil Kumar from Maharashtra, a visitor from India, said, “The beauty of Sonamarg is amazing. The snow-covered peaks and peaceful landscape make it perfect for nature lovers and adventure seekers.”
Emma Larson, a tourist from the United States, added, “Sonamarg is unique. The peace and winter sports make it unforgettable.”
Officials say the rise in tourism is due to last year’s successful ice-skating event and the growing interest in winter sports.
The Sonamarg Development Authority (SDA) is adding more attractions like a new ice rink and more winter sports activities to make Sonamarg a top winter sports destination.
G M Bhat, CEO of SDA, said, “We are ready for the winter season with all necessary arrangements in place.”
“This winter, we will host games like ice-skating, snow biking, skiing, and more,” he said. “We invite tourists to enjoy the beauty of Sonamarg and the exciting winter sports we offer.”
