The Jammu and Kashmir Government is looking into a serious situation in Budhal, Rajouri, where a strange illness has caused the deaths of 14 people. One child is currently in critical condition at SMGS Hospital.
Health officials have been investigating the situation and found that the illness is not caused by any germs or viruses. All tests done in top laboratories, like the National Institute of Virology in Pune, showed no signs of infections.
The problems started on December 7, 2024, when a family of seven got sick after eating a community meal, leading to five deaths. Another incident on December 12 involved a family of nine, resulting in three more deaths. The latest case happened on January 12, 2025, when ten people from another family fell ill after another community meal, and six children had to go to the hospital.
In response to these events, the government has taken several steps to find out what is causing the illness. Health Minister Ms. Sakina Itoo visited the area and held meetings with health officials to ensure that those affected receive proper care.
Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo has also been involved, meeting with health experts and police to investigate the situation and provide the best care possible. The Health Department is monitoring the situation closely and has brought in experts to help.
Dr. Rajeev Bahl from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) held a video meeting to discuss how to rule out any possible epidemic.
After the first case, the government acted quickly by sending medical teams to collect food and water samples. They set up medical camps, mobile medical units, and did door-to-door health checks to help the community. A team of health experts has also been sent to investigate further.
While tests show that the illness is not caused by germs, toxicology tests have found toxins in some samples.
The Rajouri police have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the deaths, and they are working hard to find out what is happening.
The government is dedicated to keeping people safe and is taking all necessary steps to address this serious issue.
