Gurez Valley, 12 March – The Jammu and Kashmir government has announced that there are no plans to build a cable car from Korakbal to Athwatoo in Gurez Valley. This news comes after local MLA Nazir Ahmad Khan Gurezi asked about the possibility of improving access to the area during the winter months.
The Public Works (R&B) Department recognized that Gurez Valley is cut off for about six months each year because heavy snowfall blocks the Razdan Pass, which is the only road leading to the valley. Despite these challenges, the government confirmed that there are no current proposals for a cable car service to help people travel during winter.
In their response, the department stated, “Yes, Sir. Gurez area remains cut off during winter for many months due to heavy snowfall on Razdan Pass. However, there is no proposal under consideration for providing connectivity to Gurez Valley through a cable car from Korakbal to Athwatoo.”
The isolation of Gurez Valley creates many problems for its residents, making it hard for them to access essential services like healthcare and education. The lack of reliable transportation during winter has raised concerns about the future of the community.
Local leaders and residents have been asking for better infrastructure to ensure that Gurez Valley is accessible all year round. Many are disappointed that a cable car service, which could help people travel during the snowy months, is not being considered.
As discussions about improving infrastructure continue, it is clear that finding solutions for better transportation in remote areas like Gurez Valley is very important. Community members hope that the government will think about options that could make life easier during the winter.
