India’s D Gukesh triumphed over China’s Ding Liren in the 14th round to claim the World Chess Championship 2024 title in Singapore on Thursday.
Gukesh secured the necessary 7.5 points compared to Liren’s 6.5 after winning the final classical time control game of the 14-match series, which had appeared headed for a draw.
With this achievement, the 18-year-old Gukesh became the youngest world chess champion, breaking Garry Kasparov’s previous record.
Gukesh faced a challenging start to the championship, losing the opening round. However, he made an impressive comeback, leveling the match in the third round.
Prior to this championship, he qualified for the World Championship by winning the Candidates tournament earlier this year. “It’s the best day of my life,” Gukesh expressed following his victory.
This young chess talent has been in exceptional form lately, having previously led India to a historic gold medal at the Chess Olympiad earlier this year.
