Union Minister of Road, Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced on Monday that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, a total of 33 tunnels are being constructed in Jammu and Kashmir, with 15 of them already completed. Speaking at a gathering in Sonamarg following the inauguration of the Z-Morh Tunnel, Gadkari emphasized the importance of good roads in fostering a progressive nation.

He stated, “The Prime Minister is committed to developing the roads in Jammu and Kashmir to ensure the region’s progress and achieve the goal of ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India).” Gadkari highlighted that several ongoing projects in Jammu and Kashmir, including the Srinagar Ring Road and four major corridors, are expected to be completed and inaugurated by the end of this year.

The newly inaugurated Z-Morh Tunnel, according to Gadkari, will alleviate the hardships faced by residents who previously had to stockpile essential supplies ahead of the winter months. He also mentioned the Zojila Tunnel, which was initially projected to cost ₹12,000 crore but is now being constructed for only ₹6,800 crore, resulting in significant savings of ₹5,000 crore. This tunnel will provide year-round access for travelers between Srinagar and Leh.

Gadkari expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Modi for his commitment to enhancing infrastructure in the region and congratulated the people of Jammu and Kashmir for witnessing such significant developments, including the Sonamarg Tunnel.

As these infrastructure projects progress, they are expected to not only improve connectivity but also boost economic growth and tourism in Jammu and Kashmir, paving the way for a brighter future for the region.
