On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the newly constructed Z-Morh Tunnel in Sonamarg, Jammu and Kashmir, highlighting the region’s transformation into a hub of infrastructure development. During the inaugural ceremony, he emphasized that the area is witnessing the construction of the world’s highest tunnel, railroad bridge, and rail lines, showcasing remarkable engineering feats like the Chenab Bridge.

Speaking to the audience, PM Modi expressed his commitment to the region, stating, “Today, I came here as a ‘sevak’ (servant) among you. A few days ago, I laid the foundation stone for a railway division in Jammu, fulfilling a long-standing demand. Today, I am proud to hand over the Sonamarg Tunnel to the nation, marking another promise kept.” He noted that the tunnel will significantly ease the lives of people in Kargil and Leh, reducing hardships for residents of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Reflecting on his earlier days as a BJP worker, PM Modi shared memories of traveling long distances on foot in the Kashmir valley, even in heavy snowfall. He remarked on the warmth of the local people, which made those challenging journeys worthwhile. The Prime Minister also acknowledged the festive atmosphere in the region, coinciding with various celebrations across India, including Maha Kumbh, Lohri, Makar Sankranti, and Pongal.

Highlighting the significance of the Z-Morh Tunnel, which spans approximately 12 kilometers and was built at a cost of over ₹2,700 crore, PM Modi explained that it will enhance all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg, bypassing landslide-prone areas. This will ensure safer access to the strategically important Ladakh region and promote tourism by transforming Sonamarg into a year-round destination for visitors.

The Z-Morh Tunnel project includes a main tunnel of 6.4 kilometers, an egress tunnel, and approach roads, situated at an altitude of over 8,650 feet. The Prime Minister noted that the tunnel will boost winter tourism, adventure sports, and local livelihoods, contributing to the region’s economic growth.

Additionally, PM Modi mentioned the upcoming Zojila Tunnel, set for completion by 2028, which will further enhance connectivity by reducing travel distance from 49 kilometers to 43 kilometers and increasing vehicle speeds from 30 km/h to 70 km/h. This improved infrastructure will not only facilitate defense logistics but also foster socio-cultural integration across Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

As the region continues to develop, PM Modi’s remarks reflect a vision of progress and prosperity for Jammu and Kashmir, emphasizing the government’s commitment to inclusive development for all.
