A new digital scam is making headlines as customers of India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) report receiving fraudulent messages claiming their bank accounts will be blocked within 24 hours unless they update their PAN card details. These messages contain suspicious links that lead users to fake websites, where scammers use phishing tactics to steal sensitive bank information.

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has issued a statement debunking these messages as scams. In a post on X, PIB clarified that India Post does not send such alerts and warned the public against clicking on suspicious links or sharing personal information. “The claim that IPPB accounts will be blocked within 24 hours if PAN details are not updated is false. India Post does not send such messages,” stated PIB.

To protect yourself from such scams, follow these safety tips:

  1. Share PAN Details Only When Necessary: Provide your PAN card information only to trusted and verified organizations or platforms, and only when absolutely required.
  2. Exercise Caution with Links: Avoid clicking on links from unfamiliar sources in emails or messages. Always hover over links to verify their destination before clicking.
  3. Watch for Warning Signs: Be wary of urgent requests, threats, or deals that seem too good to be true. Scammers often use fear or excitement to manipulate individuals.
  4. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Activate 2FA for added security. This method requires an additional verification step, such as a code sent to your phone, making it more difficult for hackers to access your accounts, even if they have your password.
