Jammu and Kashmir has seen a big increase in road accidents this year, with 703 people killed and 6,820 injured from January to October 2024. The Traffic Police have been working hard to reduce traffic violations, issuing over 1.2 million challans across the region.

The data, covering all districts of Jammu and Kashmir, shows that unsafe driving, bad weather, and rash driving are major causes of these accidents.

From January to October 2024, there were 4,990 road accidents in J&K, leading to 6,820 injuries and 703 deaths.

Here is a monthly breakdown of accidents and deaths:

  • January: 398 accidents, 55 deaths
  • February: 373 accidents, 51 deaths
  • March: 443 accidents, 79 deaths
  • April: 507 accidents, 63 deaths
  • May: 597 accidents, 98 deaths
  • June: 575 accidents, 73 deaths
  • July: 566 accidents, 88 deaths
  • August: 595 accidents, 60 deaths
  • September: 503 accidents, 54 deaths
  • October: 533 accidents, 82 deaths

District-wise, Jammu had the most accidents and fatalities:

  • Jammu: 910 accidents, 105 deaths
  • Srinagar: 394 accidents, 43 deaths
  • Anantnag: 283 accidents, 37 deaths
  • Pulwama: 88 accidents, 5 deaths
  • Budgam: 190 accidents, 12 deaths
  • Kulgam: 138 accidents, 42 deaths
  • Baramulla: 170 accidents, 35 deaths
  • Awantipora: 106 accidents, 15 deaths
  • Bandipora: 101 accidents, 15 deaths
  • Shopian: 56 accidents, 5 deaths (lowest fatalities)
  • Ganderbal: 137 accidents, 30 deaths
  • Kupwara: 101 accidents, 5 deaths
  • Udhampur: 341 accidents, 63 deaths
  • Handwara: 72 accidents, 20 deaths
  • Sopore: 95 accidents, 10 deaths
  • Samba: 214 accidents, 29 deaths
  • Kathua: 372 accidents, 34 deaths
  • Reasi: 252 accidents, 41 deaths
  • Kishtwar: 102 accidents, 34 deaths
  • Ramban: 240 accidents, 46 deaths
  • Doda: 191 accidents, 21 deaths
  • Rajouri: 287 accidents, 32 deaths
  • Poonch: 146 accidents, 23 deaths
  • Railway Katra: 4 accidents, 1 death

No accidents were reported in Railway Jammu & Railway Kashmir.

To improve road safety, the Traffic Police issued 1,211,085 challans, including both court and compound challans:

  • Srinagar City: 337,644 total challans
  • Rural Kashmir: 340,356 total challans
  • City Jammu: 330,326 total challans
  • Rural Jammu: 127,207 total challans
  • NHW Ramban: 75,552 total challans

An official from the Traffic Police Department in Srinagar said they are working hard to stop violations and keep roads safe. Issuing challans is part of their effort to maintain discipline on the roads.
